Thank you for the question on preaching style, “Why are some pastors very personal while they preach, bur very different in person?”
Here might be some reasons why a pastor preached in a personal style and behaves in a impersonal style with others:
A. The pastor wants to touch the emotional aspect of the worshipers without being entangled with the personal problems of the worshiper. Thus he may seem distant to the members.
B. The pastor wants to make the sermon relevant but may struggling with personal issues. Thus he may not want others to know him too well.
C. The pastor wants to appeal to the spirit of the worship but maintain his expected dignity by the members. A pastor has to conduct himself in a dignified manner.
D. The pastor wants to share how his life has been changed by God but he knows that there may be some individuals who may be attracted to him. He keeps his distance from single or married women.
E. The pastor wants the worshipers to be transformed by the Spirit, but he may feel that he doesn’t have time to be a counselor or personal friend to others. He already has too much on his plate to do for the Lord.
Most pastors tend to be either a teaching pastor or a caring pastor. He may be very organized for the church but may be disorganized in his life. He may be visionary but has no idea of how to implement his vision. God may given him certain distinct spiritual gifts and one’s personality that is not quite Christ-like at the moment.
If one is concern about seeing the differences, then one may want to make an appointment to express one’s appreciation of his preaching and concern for his demeanor with others. At least pray for him that his words, works, and lifestyle are consistent. Sharing his compassionate approach to the Word and in life will enhance and may multiply the effectiveness of his ministry. Just a thought.
SUMMARY: A pastor wants to be relevant in his sermons and respect the office of the pastorate. Every pastor struggles with transparency and authenticity before God and before others. Pray for your pastor.
