Does using the Bible as a weapon make people want to believe in it?

Christian Living, New Testament

Thank you for the question on evangelism, “Does using the Bible as a weapon make people want to believe it?”

There are individuals who perceive that the Bible is used as a weapon to force someone to believe. However, one knows that no one can’t make/force someone to truly believe. That person may say, “I believe” with one’s words, but in that person’s heart that person is saying, “I don’t believe it.” No human being can make another person believe.

There are zealous Christians who in their passion in desiring someone to be “saved” may appear to be badgering a person to believe. For that person, if I may use this analogy that the house is one fire. The neighbor is banging on one’s door to wake the residence of that home. The neighbor yells out, “Shut up. Let me go back to sleep!” The smoke detector hasn’t gone off in his/her room yet and that person doesn’t smell it yet. Should the neighbor shut up and go back home?

It may be an imperfect analogy but that is how some Christians see the non-believing person in a burning building and that person is doing his/her best to warn and to help that person escape from that fire. If the non-believing person feels that s/he is being bullied or pressured to believe, then say politely to the Christian, “I appreciate your passionate love and concern for me. I understand what is at stake and I acciept the consequences of my own decision. If I have more questions, I will be glad to ask you so that you can share more with me.” With that answer or something similar to that as an example, I trust that the Christian will accept your answer and cease his pressuring of that person. It would be rude to continue to insist as many Christians that they themselves can’t “save” anyone since it is the work of the Holy Spirit to convicts and convinces that person of his/her need of the Savior.

I hope this may help why some Christians “pressure” non-believers to believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior for they do not want them to suffer in hell and to be with them in heaven. Their motivation is right but their method could be better.

SUMMARY: Christians do not desire anyone to perish even as God doesn’t wish for anyone to perish. The offer is real and the choice to leave the burning building is up to that person.
