Thank you for the interpretation question on Matthew 13 and Matthew 25, “Is Matthew 13:12 the same as Matthew 25:29?”
As I read Matthew 13:12 and Matthew 25:29, the words are similar, but the subject of the verses are different.
In order to understand the context of Matt. 13:12, I cite the broader verses: disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” 11 He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. 14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: “‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. 15 For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’[a] (NIV),
Matthew 25 says this, “14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag,[a] each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. 17 So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. 18 But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.
19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20 The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’ 21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’…24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’ 26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. 28 “‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ (NIV).
For one’s consideration as one compares the two passages, here are some thoughts for you:
A. Matthew 13 and Matthew 25 are parables.
B. Matthew 13 and Matthew 25 has Jesus being the speaker in both passages.
C. Matthew 13 and Matthew 25 has the object of the verse of the verse as the disciples and the people in contrast to the faithful servants and the unfaithful servants.
D. Matthew 13 has the disciples receiving more understanding of truth while Matthew 25 has the faithful servant receiving more rewards or entrusted service. Jesus is addressing his disciples in Matthew 13 and Jesus is addressing the unfaithful servant in Matthew 25.
E. Matthew 13 refers to the people hearing but not believing while Matthew 25 refers to the unfaithful servant hearing but being condemned.
The words of Matt. 13:12 and Matt. 25:29 are identical but the subject is different. Matt 13:12 refers to receiving more understanding of spiritual truth for the followers of Jesus and Matt. 25:29 refers to receiving greater reward for faithfulness to Jesus.
SUMMARY: The principle are the same but the references and results are different.
