Devotional Thoughts

Read John 3:31-36.  Circle the words that stand out to you. What is the Lord saying to you?

31 The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. 33 Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. 34 For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God[i] gives the Spirit without limit. 35 The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.

Digging Deeper

Facts. News. Opinions. Truth. How do we determine who is telling the truth and what is the truth of the matter? Do we believe the commentators of MSNBC or Fox News? Are “facts” slanted to one’s view? Who is telling the truth?

The Apostle John declares that Jesus is not of the earth but is from heaven. He came to earth and He proclaimed what He saw or heard in heaven. The listeners of John the Baptist and of Jesus have to make a determination. Is John or Jesus lying or telling the truth? Can the One and Only Beloved Son lie or deceive us? Would He misrepresent the Heavenly Father? Would God allow such a deception to stand in His name?

We may question the truthfulness of others because a person may leave out certain details for one’s own advantage. Jesus had no ulterior motives and He gain nothing from being in this world. John the Baptist spoke the truth when he pointed out that Jesus is The Lamb of God. There was no mistaken identity. The Apostle John declared that the Creator God loves the world and sent His One and Only Son to die for the sins of the world. Jesus declared that He offers forgiveness of sins and eternal life to any person who believes His words.

Would God lie to us about such an important matter of one’s eternal soul? And yet there are many people who questions God’s integrity and truthfulness? God says that He is holy and righteousness. There is no shadow of turning or falsehood in Him. Do you believe what other says about God or do you believe what He says about Himself. I trust that you will take God at His word for He can’t lie. There is salvation in the name of Jesus Christ. He died for your sins. Will you believe that He did this for you?
