Old Testament

Thank you for the interpretative question in Psalm 8, “In PSALM 8, what is meant by “The Glory of the Lord in Creation”?

When we look at famous paintings or architectural buildings, we are able to perceive the beauty and or the ingenious of the artists. The work of art is a handprint of that person. It is not all that a person can create but it is a reflection of the ability of that person.

Perhaps David as a shepherd boy, laying out in the field at night, saw the stars and the moon, the trees and plants, even the animals came to conclude that all of creation reflects the handiwork of the Creator God. He attributed it to God. He was awed see the fine details and yet the vastness of God’s work. There is beauty in what he saw in creation. He reasoned that this creation only shows a small sample of what God can do. In other words, the majesty and beauty of God is seen in the heavens above and on earth below.

Today the majesty and beauty of creation is attributed to random chance or an evolutionary process without any divine guidance or intervention. To conceive the possibility of a Creator Being would imply that the existence of the Universe and Earth has a purpose and that it might reflect that this Being exist and has some possible relationship to this planet and even to ourselves. We’re left wondering who this Being is and what does this Being has to do with Earth.

David believed that God is interested in his well-being and am intricately involved in his life. I believe that as well.

SUMMARY: Is our Universe and Earth a handiwork of God or just a random evolutionary process? The observer must decide for oneself.
