Old Testament

Thank you for the interpretative question on Genesis 32:24–30, “What is the significance of God manipulating Jacob’s hip to win, when they wrestled in Genesis 32:24-30?”

Here’s some thought on God and Jacob wrestling through the night:

  1. Jacob was fearful of his older brother coming with 400 men to kill him as he once swore. Looks like Esau hasn’t forgotten otherwise why would he be coming with 400 men (vs. 6).
  2. Jacob wasn’t 100% assured that his gifts to his older brother will be sufficient to appease his anger. He may just take those gifts and everything else he had! (vs. 13–18).
  3. Jacob was still a proud man. He worked 20 years for what he gained. He outfoxed his father-in-law, Laban who deceived him again and again (vs. 7–10)
  4. Jacob realized that only God could prevent his death from his brother Esau. He prayed for divine intervention and God sent an angel or the angel of the Lord to be with him. When Jacob saw that “man”, he must have believe that it was a messenger from God. He didn’t want this man to leave him without blessing him (vs. 11)
  5. Jacob wrestled with that “man” through the night to show his faith and perseverance. Certainly the “man” could have defeated or killed him but that was not his purpose. Jacob needed a personal assurance from God and received it as his brother was coming. The angel blessed him and gave him a new name, Israel (vs. 24–26).
  6. Jacob received a hip injury so that he couldn’t run from his brother even if he wanted to. He had to come humbly before his brother. That injury reminded him of wrestling and surrendering to God (vs. 30–31).

SUMMARY: We can’t “buy” or bargain our way out of troubled, but we can wrestle in prayer before God, learning to surrendering to God.
