The Bible

Thank you for the question on faith and the Bible, “If you wanted more people to believe in God which passage in the Bible would you rewrite?”

I would not rewrite any portion of the Bible at all.

Here are some thoughts why I wouldn’t rewrite any portion of the Bible for one’s consideration:

A. Re-writing any portion of the Bible would reflect that the Bible is faulty or incorrect. The Scriptures are true and accurate. The problem is not the Bible, but our understanding of the Bible and interpreting through our own lens or understanding of our world.

B. Re-writing one portion of the Bible would lead to re-writing other portions of the Bible. Before long, one would not have the Bible at all. The Jesus Seminar Group has just done that in which they would say that Jesus didn’t say any or hardly any of the words in Gospel. They even question his existence.

C. Re-writing any portion of the Bible would not necessitate more people would read it. It would led to greater confusion for whose version of the Bible is correct: yours or mine? This will lead to discrediting the Bible.

D. Re-writing any portion of the Bible does not mean greater number of people will come to salvation. Salvation is a gift from God by grace through faith.

E. The Bible was written for God’s people, not for the people of the world. A person who is not a believer may find the biblical narrative interesting but its application is irrelevant to that person. The Scriptures are for believers who believe in God’s promises and lives according to the promises of God. It’s purpose is not to become The Best Seller.

The Scripture says this in II Timothy 3, “6 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (NIV).

Additionally, Hebrews 4 says this, “12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account” (NIV).

SUMMARY: To re-write the Bible is to accommodate man instead of man recognizing his need of salvation from God. Who wants to called out that she or he is a sinner!
