Devotional Thoughts

Read John 5:16-18. Circle the words that stand out to you. What is the Lord saying to you?

16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

Digging Deeper

As Christians, we declare that individuals can see the handiwork of God in creation. Evolutionists question that statement. Some might say, “I don’t see any fingerprints of God? Where is God?” For us, can we really say that we see the handiwork of God? Perhaps for some of us, we may even wonder ourselves, “Is or how is God active in this world? Is He active in my life?”

Did you notice what Jesus said about the Father’s activity in this world? He said this, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” Jesus declares that God is not passively sitting in heaven doing nothing. But rather, He is active. We can have a misconception that at the end of the six days of creation that God rested and now He is doing nothing in heaven.

Jesus states that the Father is at work. His work did not end in the past, the verb is present tense. That means He is currently working, right now. God is still active and interactive with His creation, even at this very moment. He further qualifies this statement that God is always at work, not sometime, or most of the time, but all the time.

Do you remember the Lord’s prayer? Who gives us each day our daily? Who forgives us of our debts? Is it not the Heavenly Father! If we don’t see the hand of God in our lives and in our world, the difficulty is not with God, but with our perception of His works.

Take a moment. Stop and be still before our Heavenly Father. The events in our lives are not by accident but are in accordance with His will and His work. God is active in our difficulties and good times. Jesus states that God is at work right now. Are you able to see the hand of God in your life and in your circumstances? Consider the work that He is doing in and through your circumstances.
