Devotional Thoughts

Read John 6:25-29. Circle the words that stand out to you. What is the Lord saying to you?

25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”

26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”

28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”

29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

Digging Deeper.

Did we find what we wanted under the Christmas tree? Did you surprise your wife with a Roomba IRobot so that you don’t have to vacuum the house anymore? Did she surprise you with a tool set so that she can stop calling the repairman! What were you expecting to find under the Christmas tree?

My wife and I stopped buying gifts for each other. We give each other money so that we can take each other out for dinner! That’s a hint that she wants more time with me. She loves seafood so I took her to Joe’s Crab Shack for their Classic Steampot of Dungeness crab and snow crab with shrimp, corn, potato, and sausage. She was very happy and I had the Captain’s Dish. Yummy!

For those of us who have a significant other, we probably work and save our money for that special anniversary dinner or vacation. Jesus said this: “7 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” 28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent” (NIV).

What is a worthy life time investment? It’s not reaching the $1 or $5 million mark so that one can retire with comfort and ease. That’s working for food that spoils. Have you made any effort to look into spiritual values at all? Things that will impact your life and the kingdom of God forever. You know that your spiritual life is more valuable than your physical life. If you haven’t given much time for things that have spiritual value, there is no better time than today to start.

Jesus said, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One Whom He sent.” That is the place to begin in investing into eternity. It’s not just about going to church or giving a donation to the church. It begins with a relationship in becoming a child of God. But it does not end there, again, it is just the beginning. God has a wonderful journey and great works planned for those of us who are His. Read again John 3 and continue in the Gospel of John. It’s a Gospel of Life.
