Thank you for your question on the Bible, “Is it a sin to say that the Bible is not the Word of God?”
Here are some thoughts for one’s consideration:
1. It is expected of a person who is NOT a Christian to say that the Bible is not the Word of God. To that person, it is not sin. He doesn’t believe there is sin. There may be mistakes or poor moral choices in life, but it is not sin.
The term sin is associated with what God calls the missing or failing to follow or obey the command of God. From God’s perspective, he perceives it as calling him a liar.
I John 5 says this, “9 We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life” (NIV).
2. It is expected that a Christian will affirm that the Bible is the Word of God.
The very reason why that person becomes a Christian is based on the words in the Bible. That person comes to know and to believe that God is holy and righteous. He doesn’t change nor does he lie.
A person may have questions or doubts about the Word of God, but those questions is not sinned. It is seeking to understand the Word and to reconcile the conflict that he perceives between life and the Bible.
Job had a lot of questions about God’s dealing with him, even about his own existence. The Jewish people had questions about the presence and power of God as Gideon.
For a follower of Jesus to say that the Bible is not the Word of God, s/he mind as well say that he is not a Christian. At least that is being honest. The question becomes what is the bases for that person to question the integrity of God? To call God a liar is quite an accusation.
If the bases is on current scientific discovery, then what happens if the current discovery has been superseded or replace with new discoveries, what is his position at that time? Will he admit that he was wrong, repent or will he persist in his denial of the new discoveries?
SUMMARY: To state that the Bible is not the Word of God is to call God a liar. The question, then, becomes does God lie or does God speak the truth? That person has to make that self-determination.
