Devotional Thoughts

Read John 10:7-10. Circle the words that stand out to you. What is the Lord saying to you?

7 Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Digging Deeper

Would winning the $750 million dollar lottery ticket make you happy? Who wouldn’t be happy to win $750 million!  Our bucket list of life’s dream could be immediately realized. Cruising around the world, exploring exotic places, dinning at the best restaurants in the world, having a home in which we don’t have to cook or clean forever is now a reality. We can even have the best medical doctors. What more do we need in life?

Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Jesus promises us something that the world can’t offer or fulfill in us. He offers to us eternal life. While spending money can save us more time as you can pay people to do your chores, and maybe even friends.  It can’t buy us eternity. He freely offers to us acceptance and forgiveness. He leads to us green pastures of finding inner peace and contentment. Money can buy outward distractions and temporarily forgetfulness of our inner pain and loneliness. But Jesus offers us God’s plan and purpose for our lives.

Many of us, including myself, wish that we can have just a little bit more of something in this world. We’re dreaming of it, chasing after it, grasping for it. Jesus says that He can give you more than your hand can hold. The difference is this: Are we grabbing or holding onto a fistful of dollars or are we opening our hands to let Jesus fill our lives? Are you truly experiencing the abundant life that Jesus promises to you and to me?
