Thank you for the question on miracles, “Can you be intellectually honest and tell me which biblical miracles you believe and why?”
As an respondent, I am unsure how to interpret the tenor of the question as wanting to truly know what a Christian believe or to interpret the tenor of the question of the foolishness of one’s answer since one “knows” that miracles are not possible.
The Scripture calls on Christians to be gracious to everyone. Thus I will interpret the question in a positive light.
As some respondents have already stated, the premise for a miracle to happen is the existence of God. Scientists states or believe that the natural laws are consistent since they believe that we are in a closed system. As a Christian, I do not accept that premise that the universe is a closed system since God and the angelic beings transcend the universe.
I agree with other Christians that the resurrection of Jesus Christ is The miracle. For the Apostle Paul states that if Jesus Christ didn’t rise from the dead, then there is no eternal life. The question becomes is the biblical account trustworthy. I believe it is trustworthy record since the very foundation of the Christian faith is being honest, not bearing false witness. It is commanded by God in the Ten Commandments.
The Apostle John says this in I John 5, “9 We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”
There are two choices: God is lying or God is truthful. Is the biblical record of the death of Jesus Christ accurate according to medical science? Is the biblical record accurate in the crucifixion of criminals on a form of cross? Is the biblical record of Jesus being entombed accurate according to the culture of that day as verified by archaeologist? Would the Apostles be willing to die for a lie if Jesus was not dead? Would the Apostle Paul make a foolish statement to the Corinthians in I Cor. 15 that they can speak to some of eyewitnesses of Jesus’ resurrection if it wasn’t true? If one discredit the biblical text as a testimony of Jesus, then the person has come to their own personal conclusion.
In the creation of Eve from the rib of Adam, one would consider that as a miracle in Genesis 2. For centuries, it was viewed as a fairy tale that a rib from a man can form another human being. Today with medical science, our understanding of DNA/RNA, etc, that it is theoretically possible to make a person or to genetically alter one’s appearance. Stem research is proceeding in growing body parts may be within our lifetime. Research is proceeding on reforming prehistoric mosquitoes or mammals found in the frozen tundra. The biblical description of Eve being form out of the rib of Adam is not that outrageous. Would it be a miracle if one day if scientists are able to form a human being from living cells of a person?
SUMMARY: It may be that the miracles of the Bible may be replicated one day by man. Man may be able to find the key that may suspend natural laws under certain circumstances.
