Thank you for the question on chapters and verses in the Bible, “My study of Biblical Hebrew includes a website where a Cantor reads the verses one at a time. It renumbers KJV Genesis 31:55 as Genesis 32:1. Does the versification continue to drift apart?”
I looked up the AKJV and the KJV. Both of those texts conclude the chapter as Genesis 31:55 with Genesis 32:1 being the “new” chapter.
It appears that the Cantor is reading from the Hebrew Text, not from the KJV. I looked it up in Analytical Key to the Old Testament by John Owens. The numbering is different. Genesis 32 begins as the KJV or the NIV. Thus, for that chapter, the numbering is different.
It may cause a slight confusion if one relies on the chapter and verse citation. It would be helpful if the Cantor clarifies that he is reading from the Hebrew text. In either case, the chapter and verses are arbitrary. They have become standardized.
I wouldn’t worry too much about it. The biblical text is the same except that the numbering of that verse is different. You are very observant.
Summary: Genesis 33 begins as the other translations of the Hebrew and Greek text.
