Read John 15:26-27. Circle the words that stand out to you. What is the Lord saying to you?
26 “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. 27 And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.
Reflections on the Word.
If you are like me, sharing Jesus is not second nature. It’s frightening because I don’t know what questions that person may ask of me, and I may not have good answers at the time. So, I say to myself, “Better to ‘play it safe’ and be the silent majority.” Is that how you feel too?
When you and I share Jesus with others, it’s not just you doing all the sharing. Jesus says that the Spirit of God also testifies. “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me” (vs. 26).
On the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came upon the believers in the Upper Room, the Spirit of God enabled the believers to testify about Jesus Christ. It was the Holy Spirit speaking through them in different languages so that the people could hear about the resurrected Jesus in their own language. The Spirit of God was testifying on the Day of Pentecost and has been every day thereafter.
When you and I open our mouths to share Jesus Christ, remember that it is not just you who is speaking but also the Spirit of God enabling you to share Jesus. When we share our testimony of how we came to know Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, God uses our weaknesses and even fumbling words to convict others.
The Apostle Paul declared these words in Romans 1, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith” (NIV).
Yes, you and I can be the little mouse that roars for Jesus Christ. Jesus said to His disciples that they must testify and so as His followers we too must testify of what God has done in our lives. Let’s shake up the conversation by introducing our Jesus to our family, friends, neighbors and even coworkers. Let’s see what the Spirit of God can do through you and me.
