Thank you for the interpretative question, “Given the assertion that whoever is to enter into Heaven must be born of God with the law written in his heart and no inclination to sin, then does the Doctrine of Original Sin break the scripture in the context of John 3:5?”
Here are some thoughts for one’s consideration on the context and text of John 3.
A. Jesus declares to Nicodemus must have a spiritual birth.
Nicodemus was a Pharisee and one of the premier teachers of the Law. Nicodemus as Saul of Tarus. If anyone was a keeper of the Law, they would be the ones.
Nicodemus came to Jesus with a question about entering the Kingdom of God by hearing John the Baptist and Jesus preaching that same message.
Nicodemus knew the Laws of God. Did he have it 100% all the time in his heart, mind, soul and spirit? If Nicodemus did, he would be perfect before God and would be able to enter the Kingdom of God based on his sinless life. Nicodemus was not sinless (Rom. 3:23).
B. Jesus states that men or mankind loves darkness than the light (John 3:19–21).
Individuals may appear holy and righteous in one’s appearance. From all outward appearances that person seems to be a godly person. God looks at the heart and knows the motivation of every person (Heb. 4:12–13).
The text says this, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account” (NIV).
David, a man after God’s own heart was not sinless nor the Apostles were without any inclination of sinning, Most of us if not all of us could not compare ourselves to David or to the Apostles despite their flaws. David committed his sin in darkness and the Apostles fled and hid in darkness when Jesus was arrested. One can’t get any “closer” to Jesus than the Apostles as they were in his presence and yet they had rivalry and jealousy wanting to be sit at the left and right of Jesus in his Kingdom.
John 3:5 affirms original sin and that humans are incline to sinful attitudes and actions. Each person must be born again by the Spirit of God. Their own efforts is inadequate and insufficient to earn them the right to enter the Kingdom of God. They need to be born from a supernatural source-from God.
The Apostle Paul states this in Ephesians 2:8–9, “8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast” (NIV). If it is not from oneself, then it must be from God.
Summary: John 3:5 affirms original sin for no one can earn entrance into the Kingdom of God by his or her good merits.
