Thank you for the question on teaching the Bible in public schools, “For over two thousand years King Solomon’s Proverbs has been the most copied, quoted, and read book in the world on the subjects of knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. Why is it not taught in our schools?”
Here are some thoughts as to why the Bible is not taught in our public schools:
A. There is a cultural shift from being a predominately a “Christian” nation to an agnostic or atheistic society.
In the early 20th century with World War I to the Civil Protests in the 1960’s, Americans were exposed to new ideas and values, moving from a rural society to the urban society. The church was no longer the central place of social gathering and activity on Sunday. The urban setting and the uprooting of Americans bean to erode the Christian faith. The city life afforded other activities on the weekend for the family. The erosion of the Christian teachings and values. The emphasizes of reading, writing, and arithmetic became the focal point of our society. They left out religion.
B. The influx of immigrants brought a diverse religious view to our country.
With the influx of immigrants from Europe, Asia, South America, and even from the Middle East with their religious belief or lack of it challenged the predominate view that the Bible had to be taught in the public school.
Buddhists and Muslims quietly objected to only one religious view was being taught while atheists overtly objected to the imposition of Christian faith and values on their children. To accommodate the diversity, schools allow Bible clubs as an afterschool activity. Christianity was no longer the dominate religious belief in our nation.
C. The increase in philosophical and scientific knowledge has question the authority and or accuracy of the Bible.
The explosion of technology in the 60’s and scientific discoveries of our world challenged the view of the world was created in six literal days. Archaeologists and geologist questioned even disproved the biblical claims of the Bible. Thus, if one part is question or disproven, then the rest of the Bible is suspected of being false. Modern scholars questioned the existence of King Solomon. If the writer is questioned, then the content is doubted regardless of the value of it.
D. Liberal educators and atheists are controlling our political and educational institutions.
Liberal scholars were hired as educators in our universities. Within two generation, they control the politics, the judicial system, and even the educational system. The agenda of the liberal movement found its voice in the 60’s and 70’s with “Down with the Establishment” which included religion or Christianity. We wanted to be a “free” society without any moral constraints. Thus, the birth of the “Separation of Church and State” rose within our nation. Anything religious must be removed from government or public schools.
As we look at our society today, the Critical Race Theory or WOKE is attempting to dominate the culture. Man is not made in the image and likeness of God. Man is an evolved being from lower forms and the domination of one group over another is not equal. We are being assigned as non-entity with the new designation of personhood. It is society who dictates who and what we are, not any religious beliefs or values.
I do believe that the Bible should be taught as an elective in high school or in college, but not a mandatory requirement. If Christians mandated that, then what about the Muslims or Buddhists? Should they be mandated as well?
Teaching Biblical faith and value are to be taught by Christian parents in their home. The United States is not a “Christian” nation. It is a pluralistic society.
SUMMARY: Proverbs or any part of the Bible is not taught in public schools because the Bible has been discredited. Schools only teach facts, not faith.
