Thank you for the application question, “Why was Abraham called the friend of God?”
Here are five reasons for your consideration of why Abraham was called the friend of God:
A. Abraham is a friend of God because he abandoned the foreign gods and goddess of his country. He didn’t carry the gods of Mesopotamia with him. He didn’t betrayed or traded in his God for the gods of the Canaanites (Gen. 12:1).
B. Abraham is a friend of God because he believed and was committed to the LORD God. He was faithful to God (Gen. 17:1–2).
C. Abraham is a friend of God because he attributed his success to God. He was not shy to publicly declared that the LORD God gave him the victory and it was not just by his own strategy or skill in defeating the enemies (Gen. 14:21–24).
D. Abraham is a friend of God because he spoke honestly and compassionately before and with God. He shared his lack of an heir (Gen. 15:2) and his plead for Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen. 18:16–33).
E. Abraham is a friend of God because he was willing to fulfill the request of God even though it would have been very costly to him. He was willing to sacrifice his son, Isaac as God commanded (Gen. 22:1–19).
SUMMARY: Abraham wasn’t just about getting from God, but believing in God.
