Today there is so much on the internet that one tends to avoid purchasing books and the ones that I recommend are already online.
For critical study, I prefer using Analytical Key to the Old Testament by Owens and The NASB-NIV PARALLEL NEW TESTAMENT IN GREEK AND ENGLISH by Marshall.
For exegetical study, I like using an older work, “THE EXPOSITORY’S BIBLE COMMENTARY by Gaebelein. For a two volume, THE BIBLE KNOWLEDGE COMMENTARY by Walvoord and Zuck. Personally, I prefer the older commentaries than the newer ones.
Every commentary writes from a theological and biblical perspective. Thus one has to be aware of the theological leaning of a writer.
Before reaching for a commentary, try using the internet for an English translation of Hebrew or Greek from whatever book one is studying. Follow up with your own study and then reading commentaries on the writer’s understanding of the text or book.
SUMMARY: Knowing and applying good Bible study method helps in understanding and interpreting the text. Use commentaries only after one has done his/her due diligence in the Word.
