Thank you for the interpretive question on the Canaanite, “What does Canaanite stand for spiritually in the Bible?”
As a respondent to this question, I want to be cautious in not categorizing a people group in a derogatory manner.
Here are some thoughts on the Canaanites:
A. The Canaanites may represent a people group who has no knowledge or has refused to acknowledge the Creator God.
B. The Canaanites may represent a people group who live lives independent of God. They do what is right in their own eyes.
C. The Canaanites may represent a people group who needs to hear of the grace and mercy of Creator God.
D. The Edomites and the Ishmaelites are physical descendants of Abraham but not spiritual seed of Abraham. Having said that, nevertheless God has promised to bless them.
Sadly in my opinion, Christians have characterized the Edomites, Moabites and even the Ishmaelites as unredeemable people and enemies of God. It is true that there has been hostility between the Jewish people and them for centuries. This hostility will one day end when the Prince of Peace will bring reconciliation to the world and to the descendants of Abraham. Christians are not only to pray for the peace of Jerusalem but peace for the descendants of Israel and for the world.
SUMMARY: The Canaanites may represent a people group who needs the grace and mercy of God.
