Thank you for the interpretative question on I John 4:4, “What’s the meaning of 1 John 4:4?”
In interpreting a verse, the context may provide insight/clues to the meaning of a verse.
The broader context says this, “This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.
4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit[a] of truth and the spirit of falsehood…13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.” (NIV).
Here are some thoughts for one’s consideration:
A. The passage teaches that believers needs discernment between truth and falsehood.
There are teachers that declared that Jesus has come in the flesh being sent from the Father as the Redeemer of the world. There other teachers that declared that Jesus is less than God or not from God, but a good man who can’t offer salvation. Thus believers were faced with discerning truth and falsehood.
B. The passages reveals that Spirit of God indwells every believer.
The way a believer knows the truth is because the Spirit indwells each person. enables the believer to discern truth from falsehood. Verse 13 says this, “This is how we recognize the Spirit[a] of truth and the spirit of falsehood…13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.”
The Apostle Paul says this in I Corinthians 6:19–20, “19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies” (NIV).
God has given his Spirit to us who indwells each believer. He assures the believer of his salvation, teaches, and empowers the believer to live godly lives.
C. The passage reveals that the spirit of the Antichrist seeks to confuse the believer that God sent his Son, Jesus to be the Redeemer of the world.
As believers listen to the various teachers, some of the believers were persuaded that Jesus is a man, not being sent from God or is the Savior of the world. The believer is faced with two different viewpoints. How will he know what is the “truth” on the deity and work of Jesus Christ.
The presence and indwelling of Spirit of God assures the believer of salvation and guides believers into all truth. John 14: 26 says this, “26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (NIV).
The Spirit of God will enable the believer to compare Scripture with Scripture, to discern truth from falsehood. Studying and speaking to others on a topic may provide greater clarity on a topic. The false teachings of the Antichrist will be perceived and rejected.
D. The passage teaches that the Spirit of God is greater than the spirit of the Antichrist.
The spirit of the Antichrist is the influence of Satan over this world and ultimately personifying himself as the Antichrist (Eph. 2:1–2). Satan works in the realm of this world. The Spirit of God works in the spiritual realm within the believer. The believer is in the world, but s/he is not of this world.
The implication is that believers are on temporary assignment on earth. The believer’s citizenship is in heaven. S/he is a child of God (John 1:12–13). Nothing can change that status of the believer because the the seal of the Holy Spirit is in that person.
Satan may influence the believer but he can’t change the destiny of the believer or possess the believer as many Christians believed. The believer may be oppressed but not possessed by Satan. He has no claim over the believer’s eternal destiny. The believer may struggle in his Christian, but he is not destroyed by Satan. Nothing can take the believer out of the hand of Jesus or of the Father’s hand.
SUMMARY: The Spirit of God within the believer is able to break any chain on the believer whether past, present or in the future.
