Thank you for the Biblical question on the temptation in the Garden of Eden, “In the Bible, who tempted Eve and who tempted Adam?”
Genesis 3 states the Biblical account of the sin of Eve and Adam. The Scriptures says this, “Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” 4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves” (A searchable online Bible in over 150 versions and 50 languages).
A. The creature who tempted Eve was the serpent.
The subtle of the serpent was deceptive as he phrase the question in such a manner which caused Eve to focus primarily on the forbidden fruit. ““Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” Both the serpent and Eve knew that answer for it was an obvious, “No” except for one tree and its fruit. The serpent phrasing of the question caused Eve to focus on one forbidden tree and fruit instead of focusing on all the other fruits that she could have eaten.
Was Eve really deceived? That was the excuse that she gave, but it was an intentional act on her part since she stated that God told them not to eat it.
B. Adam was not deceived when he ate the forbidden fruit from Eve.
Adam was aware of the forbidden fruit. He must have known where the forbidden tree was and what the fruit looked like. If Eve disguise the fruit or blind folded Adam in eating the fruit, then he was deceived, but that was not the case. He knew what he was doing and he ate the fruit intentionally.
What was the reason why he ate the forbidden fruit? The text is silent but one may think that his love for Eve was greater than his obedience to God. They didn’t know what was death for they haven’t seen any death, but it was something bad and to be avoided. Adam’s action was willful.
SUMMARY: The serpent tempted Eve and Adam chose to eat the fruit.
