Thank you for the question on the Prosperity Gospel, “What is the antidote to the prosperity gospel?”
The antidote that I would suggest, recommend is the Lord’s Prayer from Matthew 6:9–13. It is a prayer that most Christians can recite it by heart, but it is truly hard to live it.
Here are my reasons for the Lord’s Prayer for one’s consideration:
A. There is the acknowledgment that our God is the Heavenly Father. Our relationship with him is more precious than any material wealth in this world. If we seek the Father’s fellowship and face, we will not focus on materialism.
B. There is the desire to honor/glorify the Heavenly Father. Our purpose becomes the glorification of the Father, not our own name or even our own comfort. We desire God to be magnified foremost of all. If we seek the Father’s honor, we will not be focus on our own honor and comfort.
C. There is the surrendering of our own will to the will of the Father. We are self-centered individuals with our own plans for happiness and retirement. We may not be interested in God’s purpose and will for our lives. If we seek the Father’s will, we will not be engaged in accumulating wealth for ourselves.
D. There is the focus on advancing the Kingdom of God and spreading the Gospel of Salvation. We will seek to become more Christ-like in our character and Christ-like in our actions. If we are absorbed in advancing the Kingdom of God, we will not be laying up treasures on earth.
E. There is the daily dependence on God for his provision rather than on our own reserves. We will become grateful/thankful for what is given to us. We may even be incline to share our blessings with others who are in need. We acknowledge that our daily provisions is from God, not from our hard working hands.
F. There is the focus on the spiritual relationship with God and with others. We seek a restoration of relationship through confession of sins before God and with others. We do not harbor hurt or hatred for others for that hinders our fellowship with God and with others. The spiritual dimension is more important that the physical comforts in our lives.
G. There is desire to be godly in one’s thoughts and choices while being aware that one is in a spiritual battle with demonic forces. Our ability to withstand spiritual attacks or deceptions by demonic forces comes not by our own strength but by the Holy Spirit who lives in us. We are conscious of others who are in a spiritual battle and lend our support to that person in their battle.
Is the Lord’s Prayer THE antidote? There are many verses as one can use as counting the cost in following Jesus, the Parable of the Rich Fool or not loving the world and the things in this world. I believe the Sermon on the Mount enables the followers to have a more encompassing spiritual perspective on earth. The Prosperity Gospel is a deception by Satan that distracts us from the purpose of God with the Greatest Commandment (Matt. 22:34–40), with the Great Commission (Acts 1:8, Matt. 28:18–20), and with the Great Transformation of our lives (Rom. 8:28–29).
SUMMARY: An antidote to the Prosperity Gospel is the Lord’s Prayer. It must be more than reciting it but believing and living it.
