Thank you for the question regarding Genesis 46:34, “Genesis 46:34 says that “every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians.” Is there any evidence for this outside of the Bible?”
The evidence is by reading grazing of sheep and cattle on the same pasture. Cattleman in the United States as a general practice do not graze those two animals together unless one has 2–3 pastures.
“Sheep will graze very close to the ground if allowed, and this can destroy your pasture. The best system for grazing is to use two or more pastures and rotate them as needed. This system also cuts down on parasite problems. Before pasturing, be sure to remove all plants that are poisonous to sheep” (https://www.farmsanctuary.org/content/uploads/2012/06/Animal-Care-Sheep.pdf).
Since most of the green pastures were along the Nile River, the presence of sheep in competing with cattle will present a problem for the Egyptians. The Egyptians may not have 2 or 3 pastures to move the animals. It may be that they learned that sheep tend to destroy the pasture by eating too close to the ground. Just as the cattlemen did not want sheep on the open range in the United States, so the Egyptians did not want sheep on their limited green pastures along the Nile River.
