What crime did Adam and Eve commit that angered God so much He couldn’t forgive?

Old Testament

Thank you for the question on forgiveness of Adam and Eve, “What crime did Adam and Eve commit that angered God so much He couldn’t forgive?”

A. The sin that Adam and Eve committed against God is disobedience. Both Adam and Eve cognitively knew the command of God.

Genesis 2 says this about God’s command to Adam first in which Eve affirmed that they were not to eat of the forbidden fruit. “The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take car of it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” (A searchable online Bible in over 150 versions and 50 languages). Bible citations are in the New International Version.

Genesis 3 says this about God’s command by Eve, “The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” (NIV).

B. The sin that Adam and Eve committed was forgiven by God. God made a way for them to continue to live on earth but didn’t remove the consequences of experiencing physical death.

God made a covering for Adam and Eve’s sin by the sacrifice of an animal.

Genesis 3 says this, “The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. 22 And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” 23 So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life” (NIV).

As one reads the context of Genesis 2–3, if God did not forgive them, he could have killed Adam and Eve immediately for their disobedience. God’s words to Adam and Eve showed that he allowed them to continue to live on earth but suffer the consequences of their actions. Adam and Eve both experienced death of their second born son, Abel by Cain and later their own death.

Forgiveness does not mean the negation of consequences. What a person sows that is what that person will reap. Adam reaped toiling in the soil and Eve was to experience increased child birth pains. The relationship between Adam and Eve would be strained as there would be rivalry between them. That is only the beginning of the consequences of their sin.

God forgave Adam and Eve’s sin by sacrificing an animal in their place of death. Adam and Eve knew that every time they sinned against God or against each other, someone or something must pay for the consequences of their actions. God used the death of an animal to show the seriousness of their sins cost the life of an animal. In my opinion, Adam and Eve continued to enjoy fellowship with God although it was no longer in the Garden of Eden. Physical death was temporary delayed for them.

SUMMARY: God forgave Adam and Eve’s sins but Adam and Eve had to live with the consequences of their sins on earth.
