Thank you for the question on the number of Bible verses in the Gospel of John, “How many verses are in the Gospel of John?”
Bible titles, chapters and verses were added to help readers find that passage more quickly and easily. Can one imagine trying to find a verse in the Book of Isaiah! Paragraph divisions were inserted in the fourth century and later in the 15 or 16th century, chapters and verses were added to the Bible. Thus there were no Bible verses in the original autographs since they were letters to churches.
According to TheBible.life Bible Study Web Application, the Web Bible and most older version have the following verses:
Chapter 1 has 51 verses Chapter 12 has 50 verses
Chapter 2 has 25 verses Chapter 13 has 38 verses
Chapter 3 has 36 verses Chapter 14 has 31 verses
Chapter 4 has 59 verses Chapter 15 has 27 verses
Chapter 5 has 47 verses Chapter 16 has 33 verses
Chapter 6 has 71 verses Chapter 17 has 26 verses
Chapter 7 has 53 verses Chapter 18 has 40 verses
Chapter 8 has 59 verses Chapter 19 has 42 verses
Chapter 9 has 41 verses Chapter 20 has 31 verses
Chapter 10 has 42 verses Chapter 21 has 25 verses
Chapter 11 has 57 verses
I trust that my typing of the verses are correct. The total number of verses in the WEB for your calculation.
The deeper question that I am presuming is the questionable verses as John 7:53–8:11 whereby the New International Version places a bracket around those verses as well as some other verses in the New Testament. It is not the matter of number of verses but does those verses contradict the teachings in the Gospel of John or other writings of the New Testament. Jesus is not condoning sin, but exhorts her to cease her lifestyle. Thus the question is should John 7:53–8:11 be considered part of the Gospel of John or not. There are good arguments for the pros and cons regarding John 7:53–8:11. Since that is not the question, but the number of verses, I have cited the number of verses per chapter according to the WEB.
SUMMARY: The New Testament is a letter and thus it didn’t have titles, chapters or verses. The incorporation of titles, chapters, and letters are for our convenience in the finding that portion of the Scriptures.
