The Gospel of John is one of most beloved books in the New Testament Books. It’s beloved because it is written by the beloved disciple of Jesus Christ, the Apostle John. The Apostle John records his memories and experiences with Jesus Christ through the enablement of the Holy Spirit. As an elderly and perhaps the last living Apostles, his message was not about himself but about the One whom he served. It would have been easy for him to have the “last word” about himself and Jesus. He didn’t write about himself but about Jesus Christ. The Apostle John’s life and his writing is Christocentric as one reads the Gospel of John.
The Apostle John leaves us a legacy of the words and works of Jesus Christ, to be cherished through the centuries. I ask myself, “Is my words and works Christocentric or is it about I, me, and myself?” Who is the center of my conversation? Do I share more about the people, places, and possessions that I have and leave very few words if any for Jesus? My conversation reflects the treasures of my heart. I wonder what my family and friends will say in their eulogy of me. Will they say that he was a great Dad and Grandpa? Will they saw he was handy with his hands in repairing things? Will they say anything about my Savior and Lord? As family thumb through our home, my home, and perhaps by our lampstand, what will they find? Will they find a journal?
I admit that haven’t written in my journal a few months. My excuse is too busy with life, but however my last entry will be the last words that they will read about what is in my heart. What will they read about what is in your heart. If we haven’t started a journal, let start one. If we haven’t written in it, let’s start again and write what truly matters to you and to me.
Application Thoughts: Will family and friends read more about your travels and exploits or will they read more about your love for God, your spiritual concern for your family and friends, and for your church? Will they read any prayers for them? Don’t confuse what your family and friends will say at your funeral with the Lord will say about you when you stand before Him at the Bema Seat of Christ (I Cor. 3:12-15). The last page is not written yet. What do you want to write on the last page of your life?
I am going to start again in my journal. How about you? Journey with me as we delve deeper into the Gospel of John. Today is the first day in exploring nuggets from the Gospel of John.
