Why doesn’t God smite evildoers like in the Bible?

New Testament, Old Testament

Thank you for the question, “Why doesn’t God smite evildoers like in the Bible?”

This is a common question asked by many agnostics and atheists of why God does not reveal himself or judges evildoers. Since this question is about the reason why God doesn’t judge the evildoers, here are some thoughts for one’s consideration:

A. God knows that if he pronounces and carries out his swift justice, the guilty will be eternally punished.

Hebrews 9 says this, “Just as people are destined to die once, “and after that to face judgment,” (A searchable online Bible in over 150 versions and 50 languages). Bible citations are in the New International Version.

There is no “second” chance after death. When a person dies, there will be either judgment or salvation for that person. This will depend on one’s relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

B. God desires that no one perish, including the evil person by giving him/her time to repent of his/her evil ways.

II Peter 3 says this, “9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (NIV).

God desires to give humans time to repent of their evil ways. God could have immediately judged the Assyrians, but through Jonah’s preaching they repented for a time. God does not delight in the death of anyone for he made humans to fellowship and live with him forever.

C. God knows that everyone has sinned against him and that none is righteous.

Romans 3 says this,”9 What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage? Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin. 10 As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; 11 there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. 12 All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” 13 “Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.” “The poison of vipers is on their lips” (NIV).

James says that if a person breaks one point of the Law, he has broke the whole Law. There isn’t a person who hasn’t violate their own conscience, the civil law or the Law of God. In other words, there is no one is perfect before God. All have sin and fall short of the glory of God.

D. If God was to immediately judge a person who violates his law, there will be no one on earth to care for the earth.

God created man to rule and to care for the earth. If God were to condemn and execute judgment for one single violation, there will be no one left on earth. In the Flood of the earth, God almost wiped out all of mankind except for a family with 8 members. God has provided a way for Noah and his family to be saved from the judgment of God. So God has provided a way for humans man to be restored to him through Jesus Christ who paid the penalty for sins committed against God and humans.
