As one reads the Scriptures, theologians and Bible scholars have completed word studies on the subject of the Holy Spirit. One can do a personal study of the Spirit or Holy Spirit through a concordance of any book in the Bible.
The theological statement that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity is a theological designation, not a a Scriptural one. It is to help the reader understand whom is being addressed to avoid confusing the Godhead.
As one reads the Scriptures, there is greater revelation on the Holy Spirit as being person and not a force. If one wants to do a study on the Holy Spirit or Spirit in the Gospel of a John, one can come to his or her own conclusion.
Personally from my own studies, I believe the Holy Spirit is a person, not a force. The New Testament states that the Spirit is able to comfort us, convict us, to regenerate us, teach us, indwell us, give us spiritual gifts, etc all points to a being. In Matt 28:19–20, followers of Jesus are baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is part of the name and is associated with beings: the Father and the Son. It would be unlikely to add a force with the name and beings.
Christians are called the upon to study the Scriptures and not just accept a theologian or a pastor’s word on it. One need to be convinced in one’s own mind and heart and yet be open to considering other viewpoints. The Spirit of God will teach us and guide us into all truth.
Summary: Don’t just take my word or other Quora respondents. You will be bless by studying the Scriptures for yourself.
