Thank you for the question, “Has Covid 19 deepened your faith?”
As I thought about this question, Covid 19 has affected and affirmed my faith.
Covid 19 has shown that no one at this time is not immune from Covid. There is always that 1% chance of getting it despite all the protections that one takes. Some people are hunkering down in their home refusing to step outside their house to avoid Covid 19. As long as one is a person or even an animal, there is the possibility that one can be infected by it whether through someone’s delivering the grocery or pizza. A lesson learn is that sin affects others. There isn’t such thing as an “innocent” sin that doesn’t affect anyone. Sin is liken to Covid. Don’t spread it!
Covid 19 has shown that life is fragile and tentative. One doesn’t know if one will survive it or not. Death knocks at someone’s door and we hope that it is not at our door. Despite all the medical advances, one doesn’t know if one will die from Covid or not. We are not immune from death. It will come to all of us in one form or another, at a time unexpected or expected. We can’t escape death as much as we may try. For Christians, death is not to be feared. God knows the beginning and the end of our lives. Our lives are in his hands. We have peace in the midst of the storm.
Covid 19 has shown our true self. Christians know that we are to love our neighbor as ourselves. Is this a stated value or a real value for them or for me? Is it just an occasional card or text message to our friends or a wave of hand when we drive by our neighbor? Do I occasionally donate $5.00 to a charity or food bank or give a $1 to a homeless people to relieve me of my guilt? Do I truly have compassion for others? Every Christian searches their own heart in the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Have I reached out to my neighbors, to the widows and singles in our church or in my community? Covid 19 reflects what is in our hearts and minds. Our actions speaks louder than words. Christians are called to give themselves for others. Love must act. Love can’t be passive or absent.
Covid 19 tests our commitment to the Lord. Since most Christians are unable to gather together for worship service or fellowship group. it is very easy to be absent from those meetings. No one is counting attendance as who is present or not. They may record how many people watch the live stream service or participated in the group. If one is absent for a week or two, it really doesn’t matter. No one will miss me. The truth of the matter is that Covid 19 tests our love for our God and for others. One wonders when Covid 19 is over, will you and I be absent or present at our church. Have we become accustom to virtual worship to turn it on and do something else while it is streaming? Are we really there in body and in spirit? Covid 19 tests our commitment and love for our God.
SUMMARY: Covid 19 tests the real you when no one is watching. No one knows if you are really online or not except for God and others who may be in one’s home.
