Thank you for the question on reading the Bible, “Do some people like to read the Bible because the stories there are so extraordinary?”

I would agree with you that some people like to read the Bible the biblical account are so extraordinary.

Within each person, especially Christians, that person desires to experience what the Spirit of God did through those persons. Wouldn’t any person want to experience God working through their lives in accomplishing extraordinary things? The reading of the accounts leaves one desiring that each being a channel in which God’s power and majesty can be manifested through them to others. That person wonders if God can do the same through them. Is it too much to hope to be and do so the works of Moses, Elijah or Elisha, or even the disciples who were with Jesus? The reader wishes even pray that perhaps a little of God’s power and majesty can be manifested in and through his/her life.

From my understanding of Scripture and of Christian biographies as Charles Wesley, D.L. Moody, Hudson Taylor, even Billy Graham, one can experience to some extent the workings of the Holy Spirit in one life. It is a matter of one’s submission to the Spirit of God, the surrendering of one’s self.

The Apostle Paul writes in Galatians 2, “20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!” (NIV). If Christians truly allow Jesus Christ to live through their lives, they will experience the Spirit of God and the workings of the Spirit in and through their lives. It is more than the fruit of the Spirit but great works for God can be accomplished for it is God is at work in us.

SUMMARY: Reading the extraordinary working of God is wonderful, but experiencing the Spirit of God working in and through one’s life is the most delightful and honored privilege that one can have in this life.
