Read John 9:35-38. Circle the words that stand out to you. What is the Lord saying to you?
35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”
37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”
38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.
Digging Deeper
As one of the active writers on Quora, I received a variety of responses and comments. Some deeply appreciate what I wrote while others strongly disagree. Whether on Quora or in another forum, we seek to share our understanding on the Word of God. It is through dialogue or through reading that we grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
The blind man had no idea of who Jesus was until he heard his name being mentioned by the people. The blind man believed that Jesus was a godly person, a prophet who healed him. And for his belief, he was put out of the synagogue or the Temple. He was no longer welcome there. Where was he to go and where can he worship God? He stood for what he believed in and paid a high price for standing up to his beliefs.
Jesus didn’t leave the once blind man in spiritual blindness. John 9:35 says this, “35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” Jesus didn’t ignore the plight of that man. Jesus sought him out until He found him. I wonder what the disciples thought as Jesus was searching through all the hundreds, perhaps thousands of people for just one man.
When Jesus found this once blind man, He revealed to him that He is more than a prophet of God. Jesus told him that He is the Son of Man. He is God incarnated in human flesh who is the Lamb of God as the Father has sent Him into the world. The question is, “Will he believe that Jesus is the Son of Man?” I wonder what the disciples thought and believed about Jesus when He asked this question to the once blind man.
The man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped Him. Did His disciples who saw all His miracles truly understand who Jesus was? Did they ever worship Him or were they just observers? I believe that this once blind man had greater faith than His disciples who heard the words and saw the works of Jesus.
What about us? Are we more like that blind man before we met Jesus, that only understands Jesus as a good man, maybe even a prophet? Or, are we like the healed blind man, who believes that Jesus is the Son of Man, even the Son of God? If Jesus was to ask us that question, what would your response be to Him?
