Thank you for the question on comprehension of the Bible, “This might be a bad idea, but does anyone know where to take a thorough course on the Bible in the original languages? I’m confused about some things in the world based on my current understanding of scripture and want to understand.”

If one wants to learn Hebrew and Greek, the most likely place is attending a seminary or a university that offers Hebrew and Greek.

If one wants a good working knowledge of Hebrew and Greek, I would recommend an interlinear translation of the Bible. However, there are so many tools online that one can access to in Hebrew or Greek. Reading critical commentaries, not devotional commentaries, are very helpful since it provides varying views on a passage.

Understand Hebrew and Greek does not mean that there isn’t disagreement with Bible scholars. Learning Hebrew and Greek may allow a person to argue more clearly from the text but that depends on one’s observation and interpretation skills. It’s our theological that quite often affects our reading of the text. It is very hard to be totally objective. We all have our assumptions. I have mine as well.

SUMMARY: Being honest with the text, trying to understand how others understand the text, do one’s own careful study, and come to one’s own conclusion. Always be open since none of us have perfect knowledge about the text.
