Thank you for the question on being offended with Biblical saying, “Why do people get so offended about what the Bible says?”

There are four broad reasons why individuals are offended by the Biblical statements:

A. The Scientific Reason.

Modern man has reached the age of reason and observation. With our vast understanding of the Universe and of Earth, the Biblical statement of the origin of the Universe and of Earth is considered nonsense or fictional. Evolution is the accepted model for the origin of life through billions of years, not “”Six days of Creation.

In other words, some individuals believe that the physics, geology, and archaeology has debunked the Bible as being truth. Science has proven the Bible that the Biblical statements are untrustworthy. To insist that the Bible is true is to ignore science.

B. The Philosophical Reason.

Modern man has reasoned that the belief in god or gods is based on ignorance. It is man who created the idea of god to explain the unexplainable or the usage of god to control the people. Furthermore, the necessity of god or the proof of his existence has not been demonstrated by god or gods.

The belief in a moral god who sends individuals to hell for disobeying him seems cruel and crude The reason is if god was moral and good, he would not allow anyone to enter hell and would “save” everyone at the end. That would be the most unloving thing that god can do is to send someone to hell.

C, The Practical Reason.

Modern man finds that prayers to god goes unanswered. If god was real, he wouldn’t allow suffering or cruelty to continue on Earth. S/he can’t understand why God would ignore his desperate prayers to him. He is either non-existent, cruel, or helpless.

He finds that he must help himself or rely on himself to solve his own problems in his life. Thus, there is a non-relevance of God in one’s life. He has no one else to rely upon but himself.

D. The Subjective Reason.

Modern man finds the exclusivity of Christianity is narrow-minded. He reasons why couldn’t there be more than one way to god or why couldn’t he give different paths to different cultures. In man’s mind, all paths lead to god at end regardless of one’s religion.

The devotion of other religions is just as sincere and committed to god as Christians if not more. Isn’t good works the means to reaching “heaven” at the end? God will weigh the good and evil. Those who do more good than evil will be or should be allowed into heaven. That’s only fair.

We like to think that we have a moral life on earth. Our good deeds or the lack of evil deeds is enough for me to earn my way to heaven. I don’t need a savior. I can save myself,

Summary: As human beings, we don’t like to be told that we are a needy person. I am the self-made person who don’t need anything from anyone.
