Thank you for the interpretation question on I Corinthians 8:6, “Who is the “one Lord” of 1 Corinthians 8:6”
The NIV says this, “So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world” and that “There is no God but one.” 5 For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), 6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.”
As I read the NIV text, I decided to read the Greek text in The NASB-NIV PARALLEL NEW TESTAMENT IN GREEK AND ENGLISH by Marshal. The translators of the NIV and NASB made an interpretation on the text by inserting commas. In the Greek text, there are no commas. Thus the text says this in the transliteration of the Greek text, “yet to us one God the Father, out of whom all things and we in him, and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom all things and we through him.”
The text is clear that the one Lord is Jesus Christ for believers. There is one person the believers recognized and worship as God that is God the Father and there is one person whom believers recognized and submit to is the Lord Jesus Christ. It is interesting to not that all things came out of God the Father but the means is through Jesus Christ. Jesus is the means from God to us and for believers, us to God. Jesus is the one mediator between God and man.
There is only one God, but the manifestation of the Godhead is plural. If God didn’t create the universe, there would be one God and no one would know of the plurality of the Godhead. The creation of the universe and earth with the redemption of mankind allows us as humans to recognize the oneness of God and the plurality of the Godhead. Everything comes out of the Father and the means to fulfill that plan is what is called the Second Person of the Godhead, the Logos or Jesus Christ. He is Lord because he was the means whereby everything is depended on him and to whom the universe owns its redemption to (Col 1:16–17, John 1:10).
The Apostle Paul states in Philippians 2 because of the condescension of the Second Person to appear as a man and to redeemed mankind God that God has decreed that all creation including mankind will bow at the name of Jesus Christ. He is both Savior and Messiah.
SUMMARY: I Corinthians 8 states the position and function of the Godhead, not their origination of the Godhead.
