Thank you for the interpretive and application question on Matthew 25:29, “Does Matthew 25:29 support why the rich get richer?”
Matthew 25:29 does not support or give the reason why the rich get richer. Matthew 25:29 is part of a parable on stewardship and accountability to the master. The Parable of the Talents is not about becoming richer but giving an account to the master. Each servant will give an account of how one uses the gifts/resources to the master who returns.
It is important to note that the two servants do not view the talents/money given to them as their own property. It is not that they are enriching themselves. The wealth belongs to the master. They are entrusted workers of the master. The increased wealth from the faithful servant is to please the master. They work hard for him. At the time of accounting, the master entrusts the faithful servant with more of his riches. The third servant loses what was entrusted to him of the one talent for he did nothing with what was given to him.
It can be said by application that if one works hard, one can have a greater increased of wealth, but that is not the point of the parable. If the rich thinks that the wealth that they have accumulated is their, they are wrong. The wealth belongs to God who has entrusted that person with it.
SUMMARY: Every person is a steward of God’s given resources to him/her. The increased wealth belongs to God, not to the steward. A wise steward will work hard to increase what has been entrusted to him/him, but it doesn’t belong to him.
