Thank you for the evolution question, “Did evolution happen after Noah’s flood because of the atmospheric change?”
As one looks at the topic of evolution, there is macroevolution and microevolution. From a Christian perspective, I do not believe in macroevolution of species but the creation of species by God, and yet on the other hand there is microevolution or mutations within a species by nature.
The Scriptures give this order of creation which fits well with the modern theory of evolution:
A. Genesis 1:20–23 states that sea life and sea creatures were created by God followed by winged creatures. “And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day” (A searchable online Bible in over 150 versions and 50 languages). Bible citations are from the New International Version).
It is the Scriptures who first stated that life came from the sea which evolutionist also espouse. The specific order of sea creatures is not given whether sea shells came first followed by fish to other sea creatures. It is unclear whether like sea turtles were made on the fifth day or on the sixth day. The general category of sea life is stated by God. The difference is that the Scripture declares that God made winged creatures after he created the sea creatures. It can be that at that point of time in creation that making winged creatures like birds and hawks even prehistorical creatures that lived on water and on land as sea turtles but not exclusively on land.
B. Genesis 1:24–25 states that land creatures were created by God. God created livestock, creatures that moved on the ground, and wild animals. “And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good” (NIV). It appears that some animals were domesticated while others were considered “wild animals”. The command to create land animals came from the land. Thus God used the soil of earth to make the animals so there is a link between soil and animals. The specific order of animal life was from wild animals, domesticated animals, and crawling creatures. Was it created in the reverse order? What were those “wild animals” is unclear that may also include some of the prehistorical land creatures.
Of course man is the last creature created by God (Gen. 1:26–29). It is interesting to note that evolutionist places man as the highest creatures. One wonders why is that so and not some other creatures. Thus there is the “macrocreation” of God or as the evolutionists would use the term macroevolution to describe their theory of evolution.
As to microevolution, I believe God placed the natural order. After the Flood, there became microevolution or mutations. That is to be expected within a species as certain creatures were aboard Noah’s Ark. It is likely that that many of the prehistorical animals or larger animals drowned and buried in the deluge with other animals on top of them.
As the animals were released from the Ark, breeding was limited initially and with the environment change certain animals were able to adapt better than others in cold or hot weathers. Even today there is microevolution or mutations as geneticists are able to tweet the DNA/RNA of creatures and of man. Natural selection is a process due to the environment of the survival of the fittest. Man is the highest form of natural selection for man has hunted both land and sea animals to extinction or near extinction.
Although many Christians dislike using any terms relating to “evolution”, that is because one thinks that if one concedes to microevolution than one has to concede to macroevolution. It is the macroevolution that Scriptures reject as Christians believed in “macrocreation” by God if I may used that term.
SUMMARY: Microevolution happened after the Flood but the origin of species is from “macrocreation” by God.
