B. The “seven” undisputed epistles/letters of the Apostle Paul are as follows:
“Paul contributed 13 epistles to the NT, undisputed through most of Christian history. Modern – more skeptical – scholarship has aimed at Paul’s work, claiming some of the letters might have not been written by Paul himself, but a close associate. Virtually non-disputed are 1 Thessalonians, Galatians, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Romans, Philippians and Philemon” (5.4 Authorship and Dating of Paul’s Letters – Evidences for Christianity).
C. Critical Dates:
- The approximately Birth and Death of the Apostle Paul: 5–67 CE.
- The approximate conversion date of Saul of Tarsus: 34 or 35 CE.
- The approximate date of the Council of Jerusalem: 48 CE.
- The destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple: 70 CE.
It does not appear that the Apostle Paul wrote any letters during his first missionary journey after his conversion. Being one of the carriers of the Letter from the Jerusalem Council, Paul and Barnabas was sent to deliver that letter, messages to Gentile churches (Acts 15). That letter became the bases of his teachings regarding the Law and living a lifestyle that is pleasing to God.
Acts 15 says this, “Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, men who were leaders among the believers. 23 With them they sent the following letter:
The apostles and elders, your brothers,
To the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia:
Greetings.
24 We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said. 25 So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul— 26 men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing. 28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: 29 You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things.
Farewell” (A searchable online Bible in over 150 versions and 50 languages).
It is likely that the letters of the Apostle Paul were written after the Council of Jerusalem since he communicated that letter and later expounded more clearly the relationship of the Law to believers.
SUMMARY: The letters of the Apostle Paul were written between approximately 48–67 CE.
