Thank you for the question, “What are mnemonic techniques for memorizing the Bible?”
The memorization of Scripture is wonderful and being able to recite verses or passages to oneself or to others is admirable. If one wants to use mnemonic techniques, I recommend looking at this website for the nine methods that helps in memorization: https://sarconline.sdes.ucf.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/19/2017/07/9_Types_of_Mnemonics_NF1.pdf
The critical issue in memorizing Scripture is the motivation and the purpose for it. One can memorize Shakespeare plays, the element tables, the Bible, Koran, Buddhist or Hindu’s text by using varying methods, but what is the reason for it. If one has a sufficient or good reason, the memorization of the biblical text will not be an issue. For many Christians, it is repetition of it several times a day in one’s mind, saying it outloud, writing the verses out, and most importantly meditating on the words and its meaning and application to one’s life.
For myself, I look at my inner needs and or goals in my life. I look for a verse(s) that is relevant to my situation. As I select a verse or passage, I seek to understand the broader context so that I am not misapplying the verse to my life. As I look at the verse, I focus on the subject, verb, and object of that verse. I look for key words or phrases.
For example, “The LORD is my shepherd…”. I note that the word, LORD is the subject. It is all capitalized which refers to YHWH, not master or ruler. As I think about the word, LORD, that word expresses the ever presence of God. God is not distant to me, but by my side. He knows what has happened in my life, w hat is happening right now, and what will happen in the future. This is the God who watches over me. I find comfort and reassurance that God is with me wherever I go and whatever I do.
As I look at the verb, IS, it is present tense. It is not past tense or future tense. Present tense means at this time, currently. David did not say that the LORD WAS his shepherd or WILL be his shepherd. What comfort for me. The everpresent God declares that he is with me, with us.
As I look at the object, SHEPHERD, this is a subject compliment. David saw this God that he believed in was his shepherd. I begin to ponder the word, shepherd. This means that he watches over and cares for the sheep under his care. A shepherd is always by the side of his sheep, defends and even is willing to give his life for his sheep. For such, it is most comforting that I have become one of his sheep under his oversight and care for me. He knows everything that I ever need and want in my life.
As I look at the object, MY, this is an adjective, modifying shepherd. David saw this God as not someone else’s shepherd, but as his own shepherd. It is personal for him. David recall all events in his life from battling Goliath from fleeing from Saul. David had implicit trust in this God who delivered him again and again from his enemies. I ask myself, “Do I see the LORD God as MY shepherd? How much do I trust in Him?”
If one looks at the Bible verses and meditate on them, they become more than just words from a book. For the Word of God is sharper than any two edge sword and is able to discern, divide the thoughts and intents of one’s heart. I believe if one memorizes the verses in the above manner, it will be more life changing for oneself.
The Psalmist says, “Your Word have I hid/treasured in my heart that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11). Even if one is able to memorize the whole Bible, it will not increase one’s standing before God. God will ask the person who memorizes his Word, did the Word transformed one’s life? Make it personal and it will become part of one’s life.
SUMMARY: Don’t be just a memorizer of the Word but be a doer of the Word.
